“Letterpress.” “Engraving.” “Full Color.” “Edge Paint.” There are plenty of printing & paper buzzwords in the fine art invitation world. When you work with me, I’ll use my fine art training to ensure your invites charm your guests with lively textures, luminous colors, and refined finishes.

The Art of Production

A beautiful design is only the beginning. The printing methods you choose transform the details
into a tangible heirloom, setting the tone for your event or personal correspondence before the envelope is even opened.

Below is a guide to the production techniques available to bring your stationery to life.

Digital Full Color
(Flat Printing)

Perfect for designs that require a painterly touch.
Digital printing applies ink flat against the paper,
creating a smooth, flawless finish.
It is the ideal medium for capturing the delicate nuances
of watercolor illustrations, complex patterns, or vibrant
washes of color that look and feel like the original paintings.

letterpress

A heritage technique that brings words to life.
Using antique presses, an inked plate is pressed deep
into soft, pillowy cotton paper. The result is a stunningly
tactile "deboss" that invites you to run your fingers over
the text. It creates a play of shadow and depth that feels
undeniably romantic.

engraving

The gold standard of traditional etiquette. Engraving is a
meticulous process that pushes the paper
upward, leaving the ink raised on the surface with a
slight bruise on the reverse side. The extreme sharpness
of the lines and the unique texture of the raised ink
convey most delicate of details, and is unparalleled for
vibrancy when printing color inks on color paper stocks.

foil stamping

For moments that require a touch of brilliance.
Similar to letterpress, foil stamping presses the design
into the paper, but uses a metallic or matte leaf instead
of ink. It catches the light beautifully, adding a lustrous,
jewelry-like quality to names, borders, or key details.

embossing

Texture in its purest form. Embossing sculpts the paper
itself, raising a design in relief without the use of ink—
often called "blind embossing." It relies on shadow and
light to reveal the image, making it a fine choice for a
subtle monogram or a sophisticated pattern.

die cutting

Stepping away from the standard rectangle, die cutting
allows your stationery to be trimmed into custom
silhouettes—from graceful waves and circles to intricate
organic shapes. It transforms a card into an object of
interest, adding a layer of architectural beauty to your suite.

edge painting

The ultimate finishing touch. Ink or metallic foil is
applied to the very edges of your card stock. It adds a
delightful pop of color that is visible even when the
invitation is resting on a table, proving that no detail has
been overlooked.

The Alchemy of Design

Often the most compelling suites come from marrying different techniques to tell a richer story. I might suggest pairing the vibrant, painterly details of a digital watercolor illustration with the deep, historic texture of letterpress text. This contrast creates a suite that feels both modern and timeless.

Curating Your Collection

With so many beautiful finishes available, selecting the right print method is less about technical specifications and more about the feeling you want to evoke. You do not need to navigate these choices alone. During the design proofing process, we will explore the various printing options, and combine the best choices for your event and personal aesthetic. My role is to guide you toward the combination of paper, ink, and impression that feels authentically you.

Together, we’ll combine your personality
